"Hurrah for Japan: One Hundred
Selections—One Hundred Laughs"
"The Sino-Japanese War: Public Display
  of Laughs and Amusement"
By Kobayashi Kiyochika, 1894–95
Kiyochika’s manga amounted to satirical political cartooning, and introduced a new level of ridicule and mockery to depictions of the Chinese foe.
Such depictions were comparable, in sometimes ironic ways, to the “anti-Oriental” cartoons produced by the English, Americans, and Europeans at this same time. (See “Orientalism—the War in English Eyes.”)
